reviewing game text
Game text is organized into buffers. You'll see a list of in and out of character content organized by type-- dm's, game text, tutorial text, etc. You'll want to review these often as this is how you review instructions when your quest changes, you get new abilities, etc.
Preparing for combat
All-too-soon, you'll be facing your first fight in Kirandur. To prepare for that, you'll want a weapon equipped, readied, and have abilities assigned to your quick-slots, so that no foe in the lands can best you.
Assigning quick-slots
First, move to your inventory by arrowing to it, and then pressing up and down arrows until you find an item. Press space on that item to equip it, if you aren't already wearing something in that slot. Review what you're wearing by pressing left or right arrow to equipment, and review with up/down arrows. Remove an item with space, and it goes to your inventory.
Now, arrow again to abilities. Arrow through the available abilities and examine them with shift+space to hear a description of what each does.
To assign an ability to a slot, press control and a slot key. The available keys are 1 to 0, u and i, h and j, and n to /. (command on mac)
Readying a weapon should happen automatically, but press ` to toggle it.
When taking damage, press ' to immediately target the creature targeting you.
Attack with your newly-assigned abilities, and watch for level-ups. As you gain abilities, you'll see them in the game buffer, and remember to assign ability points to buff up your attacks and defense, as well as your secondary, derived stats. Do this by pressing tab to enter the menu, and down arrow to character. Press enter on that, and tab to trainable stats.
